How To Leverage SRED (SR&ED) Tax Credit Financing And Factoring for Cash Flow

Cash flow your SR&ED claim today !

Information on Sr&ed tax credit financing. Factoring / cash flowing your Sred claim via a Sr&ed loan immediately leverages your firms cash flow investment in your r&d capital investments

Leveraging your SRED (SR&ED) Tax credit via the financing and factoring of your claim is a responsible way to maximize cash flow and working capital. It’s all about timing, and if your firm requires additional working capital financing the ability to cash flow or discount your claim for working capital today is a clear and viable option.

Canadian business owners that partake of the program in Canada clearly have recognized the benefits of research and furthering their competitive position in product and services. Although tens of thousands of firm take advantage of the program we are always amazed at the number of our clients that either have not heard of the program, much less take advantage of it.

Let’s do a short primer on the program, and more importantly, the financing aspects of your claim. And trust us, we are not talking about going to your chartered bank for that financing, as this type of financing is somewhat boutique and niche requires specialized financing and financing assistance.

The federal SRED program is s of course for private companies that qualify for a non repayable tax credit, in effect a grant from the government for a large percentage of their R&D spending. Your ability to recover that cash flow is of course a very positive aspect, but, the ability to finance your claim as soon as it is filed, ( in some cases before ) simply is one more alternative in today’s challenging cash flow environment to monetize a short term asset and turn it into cash flow .

So how does Sred (Sr&Ed) tax credit financing and factoring work? We use the term factoring because its becoming more broadly understood and accepted in Canada - so what we are simply saying is that your sred (sr&Ed) claim is in effect a receivable, and in the same manner that you would consider financing a receivable is really the same logic and methodology around a sred financing.

Is it difficult to finance a Sr&Ed? We keep that explanation to our clients very simple. If you have a sred that has been prepared by a qualified consultant or accountant and your company has viability then your claim is financeable. Is that complex, we don’t think so.

Have you ever applied for any type of business financing before? What was involved? - Typically it was filling out an application, providing back up documentation, and clarifying, if required to a business lender, any information that required explanation. Guess what, that’s the SRED process also.

A claim can be financed in a matter of weeks, which we think is a very typical time for any type of business financing these days. After a basic business application and review of your sred a term sheet is issued. Typically the main collateral for the financing is of course the sred claim itself. In Canada its typical to receive about 70% LTV for your claim, meaning that if you calim is 300k you would receive immediate financing for 70% of that amount .Whats the monthly payment clients ask?

Here's the good news, there is none. You put that cash flow to work and when your claim is finalized, adjudicated and paid by Ottawa then you receive the other 30% of your claim , minus of course the financing costs, which typically are in the 1.5 -2% range per month .

Speak to a trusted, credible, and experienced Canadian business financing advisor on how SRED (SR&ED tax credit financing and factoring works. Cash flow today from a government non repayable grant - How could you not consider that option!

SR&ED Or SRED ? – Call It What You Want But Take Advantage of SRED Funding Or Factoring!

Financing your SR&ED Claim Makes Cash Flow Sense

Information on sr&ed financing in Canada. The ability to factor sred claims enhances cash flow for recovery of your r&d capital investment

Semantics we tell clients. You can call it you Sred claim, your Shred claim ( they use that a lot also ! ) or your SR and ED claim . You can even throw in an ampersand and correctly write it as SR&ED.

But there is only one bottom line, which is, why you aren’t considering financing your claim. Putting our semantics aside many business owners and financial managers are inquiring as to the financeability of their claim. More often that not they have been told by their bank that this type of claim is not financeable, and even though you are showing it on your books as a receivable it cannot be margined for working capital and cash flow .

Two words. They are wrong, as Sr Ed claims can be financed in a large number of situations. They are financed utilizing Sr Ed Canadian business financing advisors who are experienced in this niche area of Canadian finance.

We believe it’s always good to recap the basic and set the stage for our financing discussion. The program is of course a federal program, in concert with the provinces, that encourages small, medium, and dare we say it, large corporations to conduct research on products, process, etc.

How committed is the government to this program ask clients? Very we say, given that approximately 4 Billion dollars are doled out each year to the 1/3 of the companies that take advantage of the program. That of course infers that 2/3 of eligible customers in fact don’t use the program. We have heard a litany of reasons around why they don’t from clients - they include : we're too busy, its sounds complicated, we don’t want to get audited , our r&d spending is not large enough, etc . These firms would simply be better off keeping it simple and saying, ' No we don’t want funds that are non repayable that re-imburse us for our r&d’, because that’s in effect what they are saying.

If you have a valid claim prepared by either an experienced internal party, but more preferably a true sred consultant then you can finance your claim. Funds for approximately 70% of the claim value are provided to your firm with the collateral of course being the SR ED receivable. Of course you can wait for 3, 6, or 12 months to receive your funds, but why not consider putting that valuable cash flow and working capital back to work in your business.

Clients who finance Sr &ed claims typically use the funds for general working capital purposes, further r&d , new equipment, marketing, etc . The bottom line is that you choose the use of the funds. And by the way, that other 30% of your claim is still yours of course, it’s returned to your firm, less financing costs, when the government sends your cheque. And get the news get any better, but no payments are made on the SR Ed loan, interest simply accrues and is calculated at the end of the financing.

Don’t fail to consider sr &Ed financing as a way to stay one step ahead of the competition and satisfy your cash flow and working capital needs at the same time. Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced sred Canadian business financing advisor to assist you with the factoring of your claim.

Smart To Finance Your Sr&ed Tax Credit Via A Sred Loan ?

Everything You Wanted To Know About a SRED loan but were afraid to ask!

Information on the benefits of a sr&ed tax credit loan . Sred loans monetize your refundable tax credit and cash flow your r&d capital investment

You decide. Does your firm want to consider the benefits of a SR&ED tax credit loan? If you participate in Canada's sr&Ed program you are immediately eligible to consider financing that claim. Lets looks at why that might make sense, what are some of the benefits of monetizing your sred grant, and, finally, how exactly do you do that?

Any firm that has filed a sred claim via their own preparation, the utilization of a sred consultant, or through the use of their accountant has probably quickly picked up that billions of dollars every year are allocated to this program.

By participating in the program your firm is eligible for the non repayable grant on which the entire program is based.

So you have filed a claim. You are now in the waiting game process, as your claim has to be acknowledged, audited, and then processed for a refund cheque. When we talk to clients about what they will use the funds for a number of scenarios emerge - some firms hire additional staff, others , not surprising re invest in the entire r&d process to maintain their competitive posture within their industry .

In sharing our information on our sred subject we are making the assumption your firm knows about and is maximizing the program. As a sr&Ed claimant your firm develops or improves existing products, develops new ones, or invested in various process improvements via a trial and error type scenario.

So where are we at - we've simply re enforced the fact that your firm is aware of the program, it participates, and, via your sred consultant or accountant you are maximizing your eligibility for the maximum refund possible.

Cash is king, and you have spent a lot of your cash on the actual R&D involved in the program. Your firm has the option of financing your credit, as soon as it is filed. Clients are often confused about the financing of their claim - basic questions always seem to be - how much does it cost, is my firm incurring debt that I do not necessarily want to take on, and how long the process takes to finance such a claim and whats involved.

Let’s cover off those key points, which should allow you determine if you should consider financing your claim. We'll also throw in a few tips around maximizing your financing should you choose to proceed.

SRED financing of your sr&Ed tax credit is somewhat of a boutique finance industry in Canada. It is very rare that your bank will finance the claim. We certainly don’t agree with that, because in effect it is an account receivable, and they do finance receivables, don’t they??! Anyway, your firm will have to have a strong borrowing relationship with a bank to finance your claim. The reality is that this type of financing is best and more quickly achieving via a sred financing specialist.

Rates for sred financing vary, and factors that affect the rate tend to be size of claim, your company's current financial position ( many sred claimants are early stage, pre revenue, etc ) , as well as the perceived quality of your claim .

A sred loan is not debt per se, that’s important to understand, you are simply monetizing, or ' cash flowing ' one of your receivables, in this case the sred . Sred loans are structured as no payment loans and the final financing charges are simply deducted from the final cheque you receive from our good friends in Ottawa.

Sred financings can be processed, and funded in as little as two weeks - very standard application paperwork is involved, and the main collateral is or courses the sred itself.

Here’s some final tips we promised - have your sred prepared by someone who knows what they are doing, sred consultants are the best in this area as they are specialized. Count on receiving at least a 70% advance on your claim. Also, did you know that under certain conditions your sred can be financed prior to filing?

We’ve e shared some tips and procedures that will allow you to consider financing your claim. If additional cash flow and working capital are important considerations speak to a trusted, credible, and experience business financing advisor to validate your sred loan options.

SRED Financing - SR&ED Finance Loans in Canada

SR&ED Financing
is your firm's ability to take immediate cash flow and working capital advantage of our SR&ED tax credit claim. This program, (formal name = Scientific Research and Experimental Development) is bar none the best tax incentive program in Canada. Other than being taxable as income the refund you receive from the government is a non repayable grant. What could be better than that?

The irony in this great program is simply that almost 70% of companies in Canada that are eligible for the program do not even apply, let alone receive their funds! It clearly is a source of untapped cash flow and working capital for your Canadian business that should be maximized to the hilt.

The other 30% of Canadian firms who use the program utilize it around their efforts to develop new products and services, building prototypes, and solving technological challenges.

So your Canadian controlled private company utilizes and files SRED filings. Did you know your claim can be financing immediately after you file it, literally the same day. Specialists that work as 'SR&ED consultants are experts in preparing your claim and in Canada your SRED claim can be prepared at your cost - and you keep all the proceeds of the government grant, or alternatively, your claim can be done on a contingency basis, at no cost to yourself, and the consultant usually keeps anywhere from 10-30% of the total refund received.

However most Canadian business owners and their SRED consultants do not know that your claim can be financing, either during the preparation of your claim, (yes, before your file, if you qualify!) or immediately on filing of your claim.

Generally with this type of financing you receive immediately approximately 70% of the value of your claim. The other 30% still comes back you of course, but its simply a bit of a buffer to cover financing costs and any risk that a portion of the claim will be disallowed or clawed back.

When we think in terms of specialty financing we can categorically state that SRED financing is specialty financing in Canada. We urge clients to locate a business financing advisor who has credibility, experience and background in this area.

The SRED financing process is not as complicated as you seem if you are well prepared and have access to good assistance. Its as simply as completing a basic business financing application, ensuring proper back up is in place and valid. That includes info on your company, the SRED claim itself, your previous SRED claims if you have filed previously etc.

The reality is that SRED financing can be completed within 2-3 weeks of starting the process. The beauty of this type of financing is that no payments are made on the SRED loan. In effect you can say that you have factored or discounted the SRED claim. You are simply waiting for your cheque from Ottawa, and are making use of the working capital and cash flow now. That's a solid interim financing strategy for many firms, and that cash can be used for reduction of payables, investments in new equipment, additional staff, etc. The bottom line = any general worthwhile corporate purpose.

In summary, of course ensure you are taking advantage of Canada's Sr&Ed program. Once that is the case you have the option of financing your claim, allowing you to maximize the true benefits of the program, i.e. the recovery of your R&D expenses in the most time efficient manner possible. That's a solid financial strategy.

Finance Your Sred Claim Now . Take Advantage Of Your Grant Today

SR&ED financing - A Solid Cash Flow Strategy !

Information on how Canadian firms utilizing the SR&ED program can finance their sred claim. Cash flowing your sr&ed refund is a solid source of working capital and cash flow for companies committing r&d capital

Your ability to finance your sred claim (aka ‘sr&ed claim) simply signifies the cash flowing of your non repayable government grant. We think that anytime you can hasten cash from the government and turn that into immediate cash flow and working capital, well... that is a good thing.

SRED grants, (sr&Ed grants) are of course the funds you received from Canada Revenue Agency based on the filing of your Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) claim. These funds have never been more generous and many Canadian business owners and financial managers are not aware that the program even exists, let alone their ability to partake in the billions of dollars of non repayable grants issued by this department within CRA Canada. Essentially it is the largest support for research in Canada. Many clients are always asking us if there are ‘government grants and loans ‘. We are of the opinion that the two best programs in Canada to finance your firm are the federal BIL/CSBF loan and of course the SRED program.

Your firm ability to generate a claim immediately turns into a non repayable cash grant. Timing is everything, and you have the ability to finance that claim if you want to monetize those funds and get them working inside your firm. For many early stage and start up firms the ability to finance their sred claim is often the largest receivable the firm has that year. And the beauty of the program is of course that as along as your firm is a private corporation you can partake in these funds.

As companies, and even as consumers we generally use an ‘expert ‘to prepare our taxes and file them. It is certainly no different with SRED and we recommend that you use a sr&Ed consultant to ensure your claim is prepared properly. Naturally using their own expertise, or the governments self assessment tool you want to be sure you are eligible for the grant, given that it takes time to prepare and file the claim.

Naturally after filing a professionally prepared claim you are of course entitled to wait for you cheque – that timeframe can be anywhere from a couple of months to potentially close to a year depending on some key factors as your first time filing, and the due diligence that SRED employees do on the technical and financial aspects of your claim .

So you are eligible for Sr&Ed. You have filed a claim. You have been made aware you can finance the claim, but you are not sure how. In general the banks in Canada don’t finance these sorts of claims – that’s a general statement, but 99% of the time we are pretty sure we are correct in making that comment. Therefore it is strongly recommended you contact a business financing advisor who specializes in sred finance. At that point it’s a relatively simply process, and we encourage clients to view it as they would any business financing, from a lease to a loan arrangement. There is standard application information, and the whole process, up to an including funding, can be completed in a manner of weeks.

As a general rule it makes sense to finance claims that are over 250k in size, but quite frankly smaller claims can also be financed. There is no challenge to the amount of financing re the size of a sred filing – Claims well in excess of a million dollars can be easily financed.

The key advantage of financing a claim is that you are not undertaking any debt; you are just discounting a receivable that you have – that receivable being the sred claim itself. The sr&ed filing itself is the actual collateral for the financing – and if you want more good news then you should be aware you don’t makes payments on a sred claim finance. The funds advanced are netted out from your final chq from the government. Usually sred claims are financed at 70% of their filed value that leaves a buffer in case part of the claim is downsized when approved.

Cash flow is king, if you have a sred claim be aware that claim is financeable , and your ability to get those fund working again usually puts you in a more competitive stance within your industry , and allows those funds to be used for further research or any general working capital purpose . Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced advisor in this area to ensure you are aware of the benefits of sr&Ed finance – claim those funds!

SR&ED Tax Credit Financing in Canada

Turn Your ' Waiting Pain ' Into Happy When It Comes To Your Firm's SR&ED Refund Claim

Information on SR&ED financing in Canada. The ability to monetize your sred refund can be a key component of your overall cash flow strategy in the recovery of your r&d capital investment . SR&ED bridge loans.. work!

SR&ED (SRED) tax credit financing is a solid strategy used by more and more Canadian business owners and financial managers who wish to accelerate the benefits of Canada’s Sr Ed program. Cash flowing, monetizing, or factoring ( they all mean the same thing!) your Canadian Sr ed claim can accelerate cash flow and working capital for your privately controlled Canadian business that is utilizing SR ED credits under the governments program .

In many ways the financing of your Sr ed credit actually allows you to maintain your competitive edge, as the combination of your non repayable tax credit and the immediate financing of it are a ‘ double whammy ‘ in the face of your competitors who might not use this strategy .

A banker we deal with recently told us that current industry statistics show that many companies who are in fact eligible for the SR ED credit aren’t even applying for it, let along financing it. Therefore when your firm maximizes on the total value of your claim, and then generates instant cash flow on that claim you are clearly leading the pack in this regard.

Many clients tell us that they utilize the Sr Ed funds that they finance to assist in acquiring new equipment that allows them to maintain a competitive edge in their markets. The reality is of course that these funds can be used for an general corporate purpose , which might be things such as equipment acquisition, advertising and marketing, reduction in payables or debt, or of course the continued investing of even additional research and development efforts .

So what is the cash flow and working capital potential in your SR ED, and how do you unlock that potential? If you are already filing for SR ED credits you are no doubt working with the assistance of your client, or, alternatively, someone that is known as a SRED consultant. Having a solid resource in one or both of these parties allows you to maximize on your potential claim.

Once you have filed you claim we recommend that you consider immediately financing the claim. Naturally you don’t have to do this, and can simply wait the 3-12 months that it might take Ottawa and your particular province to review the claim, adjudicate it, and process it for payment. But, as we state, why not consider financing the claim.

Clients ask us how the actual process works. It is quite simple really. Your calim is generally financed at 70% of the total value of the amount you and your accountant and consultant have claimed. You can receive cash immediately after it is filed. In certain cases you can actually receive funds for the claim prior to financing – that whole process is called SRED accrual financing. Some of the basic criteria are simply that you must have filed a claim before, have a solid reputable party preparing it, and be prepared to demonstrate good records and accounting around those expenses you are intending to claim.

So how can we summarize in a ‘bottom line ‘manner. Its simply as follows – you should be filing Sr Ed claims if you are eligible. On filing you have the option of financing that claim, so you are bringing immediate cash flow and working capital to your firm on funds that are not repayable to the government.

Funds can be used for any company purpose, and proper utilization allows you to maintain a competitive advantage on your competitors. That’s using research as a cash flow generator – a solid financing strategy!
