The Inside Scoop On Canadian Equipment Leasing & Asset Financing

Three ' Must Know ' Things About Equipment Leasing

Information on equipment financing solutions for Canadian business . Canadian leasing solutions can solve all your asset financing needs if you know how it works best

Financing for equipment
is sometimes a challenge for Canadian business owners and financial managers. What if you had a solid understanding of 3 key elements of Canadian equipment leasing and financing. Let’s explore some key information around three critical elements of lease financing –

1. What can be financed?

2. What are the type of leases and rates available to my firm?

3. What is the best way to obtain a prompt approval at the best rate, terms and structures for my business asset acquisition?

So what assets can be financed in Canada? The reality of that answer is that almost every business asset can be financed, and moreover, two other key points need to be made. In many cases even intangible assets can be financed – a solid example is software for your business, or even the additional add on requirements that come with many asset acquisitions – these might include installation, warranties, maintenance, shipping/delivery, etc. And, furthermore asset financing in Canada definitely includes the financing of used equipment, which is a major part of the Canadian equipment financing industry. Millions of dollars of used equipment, purchased here or in the U.S. or other international locations are financed annually. We add two critical cautionary items of note here – in certain cases and appraisal or asset valuation or inspection might be required if the asset is new , and in many cases a down payment might be required on a used piece of equipment . These two points would still clearly not negate the major benefits of financing a piece of used equipment. Why used? Simply because many assets in many industries still have a very useful economic life after a typical usage of 3-5 years, for example thing production equipment, etc. In many instances, especially with the use of the internet and auction sites pricing on used equipment might be exceptionally favorable.

One other solid tip is to get your lease financing approved in advanced, as this might allow you to negotiate a better price with the vendor given you are pre approved and the vendor knows they will be paid directly from the leasing company.

Let’s move on to our second point, which is simply that there are some critical technical aspects to lease financing that are very important for business owners to be aware of . First of all you should ensure that you understand there are two types of lease financing available – to keep it simply we will simply call them, as the industry does:

Capital leases

Operating Leases

Which one is best for your firm? We always dislike saying to our clients ‘it depends ‘but the reality is that the choice of lease type should be driven by your final motivation with the asset. By that we simply mean that you need to determine, in advance! , if you intend to own the asset at the end of the lease, or if you simply want to use and return it after an agreed upon amount of time, usually 2- 5 years, although shorter and longer terms might apply (that’s the flexibility of lease financing).

Choosing the type of lease you pick will significantly impact how the lease is carried on your books, and also it is a critical factor in driving pricing. Operating leases will always be priced with a lower monthly payment as the asset is returned to the lessor at the end of the lease. Clients ask us ‘what if we later determine the asset still has a useful economic life and we wish to keep it? Again, here is where the flexibility of lease financing comes in, because you are allowed in an operating lease to pick one of three options at end of term – you can return, purchase, or upgrade. Actually there’s a fourth option, which is simply to agree to extend the lease for a pre agreed upon amount of time.

Let’s move on to our final point, which is simply – You have made the decision to acquire an asset through lease financing. How do you go about that in Canada? We advised clients to work with a credible, experienced, and trusted lease financing advisor - even basic assistance around the final rate, term, and structure could save you many thousands of dollars in payments. Or at the same time, negotiating on your behalf any critical areas such as down payment, limited personal guarantees, or end of lease options can all be the make or break point in Canadian lease financing success. Additionally, the lease financing industry in Canada is very fragmented and consists of captive firms tied to manufacturers, independent Canadian and U.S. firms, and very specialized firms that only do or finance certain things.

In summary , arm yourself with some critical knowledge of lease financing and you will be rewarded with the knowledge that you have chosen the best financing method for the acquisition of new and used equipment and business assets in Canada .

How to Take Advantage of Commercial Finance Factoring Services in Canada

Assessing Factoring Costs & Benefits When Considering A/R Financing Solutions

Information on commercial financing factoring services in Canada. Working thru the costs and benefits of A/R finance solutions in Canada

Commercial finance factoring Services may be the solution you are looking for business financing and working capital for your firm. You may or may not be aware that this type of cash flow financing is used by Canadian firms from start up to major corporations.

So what are the benefits of such a business financing and how is your firm able to take advantage of these. The bottom line in business usually always come back to cash flow, and a commercial finance factoring service or facility ( we like to call them working capital facilities ) gives you a form of predictable cash flow . Essentially your working capital grows lock step in pace with your sales growth, and handles all those up and down fluctuations in between.

When we discuss this financing with clients we often use a term ' you pay only for what you use ‘. That is because your firm essentially controls the cash flow spigot, if we can call it that. You have the ability to finance one invoice, a number of invoices, or all your receivables. It's your call!

Invariably the discussion around factoring, also known as ' invoice discounting ‘turns to cost of this service. First of all you have to know how the financing works, at which point you can then assess the costs and the advantages.

Let's look at a quick actual example to ensure we understand the process and cost. Let’s say one of your invoices has just been issued and it’s for $ 10,000.00 - we'll use a clear example and round number in our demonstration. So what happens next? Your firm is advanced, immediately, i.e. almost same day, approx 90% of that invoice amount. So you receive $ 9000.00 at the same time your customer receives their invoice! Your factor discount, i.e. ' the fee' might typical be 2% on this transaction. So if your customer pays the invoice in 30 days (*we’ll be back o you on that one!) your firm receives the balance owing to you, i.e. the holdback, less a 200.00$ fee. ** We realize that not all customers pay in 30 days!

So what just happened here? You made a sale, you got cash immediately for 90%, and you got the balance of the cash (in our case $800.00) when your customer paid. Your cost was 200.00$.

Astute business owners and financial managers can use that immediate cash wisely and productively. You could pay a supplier invoice that you just received, and take a 2% discount for prompt payment. You have just strengthened your relationship with a supplier, and saved 2% - and wait a minute, didn’t we have a 2% factor fee. If you net those two out your financing cost has been effectively reduced to almost zero.

Are all fees in Canada the same, and do all facilities have the same sort of business model and paper flow? The answer is no, they don’t. Your final factor fee, or discount fee depends on your client profiles, how much of a facility you need, the invoice size, and, the most important - how well your clients pay. Remember you can now finance those clients that pay in 60-90 days and have tied up your working capital, but ensure they are profitable clients because at 2% per month carrying cost that erodes your profit margins.

In business it’s all about turnover and your ability to turnover your inventory and, in our case, receivables ultimately determine your financing costs to carry your A/R investment.

Think of commercial finance factoring services as your own ATM machine for cash flow. It becomes a solid potential alternative to term loans with fixed interest, or bank financing that has the requisite requirements that come with a bank deal - solid financials, profitability, guarantees of owners, external collateral, etc.

For those business owners and financial managers that want to get a bit more analytical about the numbers here is another way to look at it - let’s use our same example: If you factored 10,000 once a month all year would have had the use of 120,000.00 in total capital. So your total finance costs on that would be 2400$.

If you borrowed 120,000$ in working capital from your bank at a rate of 6% per annum on a typical 3 year term you would pay over 10,000$ in interest for the same capital . The factoring financing using that logic was cheaper than the bank by at least 8000.00$.

So whats our bottom line? It’s simply that our basic arithmetic has shown us that if we take advantage of commercial finance factoring services we are in control of our own cash flow destiny as well as having the ability to increase sales and offset financing costs with careful use of cash flow and working capital from this unique type of business financing. Speak to a trusted, credible, and experienced business financing advisor in this area to maximize the advantage!

Smart To Finance Your Sr&ed Tax Credit Via A Sred Loan ?

Everything You Wanted To Know About a SRED loan but were afraid to ask!

Information on the benefits of a sr&ed tax credit loan . Sred loans monetize your refundable tax credit and cash flow your r&d capital investment

You decide. Does your firm want to consider the benefits of a SR&ED tax credit loan? If you participate in Canada's sr&Ed program you are immediately eligible to consider financing that claim. Lets looks at why that might make sense, what are some of the benefits of monetizing your sred grant, and, finally, how exactly do you do that?

Any firm that has filed a sred claim via their own preparation, the utilization of a sred consultant, or through the use of their accountant has probably quickly picked up that billions of dollars every year are allocated to this program.

By participating in the program your firm is eligible for the non repayable grant on which the entire program is based.

So you have filed a claim. You are now in the waiting game process, as your claim has to be acknowledged, audited, and then processed for a refund cheque. When we talk to clients about what they will use the funds for a number of scenarios emerge - some firms hire additional staff, others , not surprising re invest in the entire r&d process to maintain their competitive posture within their industry .

In sharing our information on our sred subject we are making the assumption your firm knows about and is maximizing the program. As a sr&Ed claimant your firm develops or improves existing products, develops new ones, or invested in various process improvements via a trial and error type scenario.

So where are we at - we've simply re enforced the fact that your firm is aware of the program, it participates, and, via your sred consultant or accountant you are maximizing your eligibility for the maximum refund possible.

Cash is king, and you have spent a lot of your cash on the actual R&D involved in the program. Your firm has the option of financing your credit, as soon as it is filed. Clients are often confused about the financing of their claim - basic questions always seem to be - how much does it cost, is my firm incurring debt that I do not necessarily want to take on, and how long the process takes to finance such a claim and whats involved.

Let’s cover off those key points, which should allow you determine if you should consider financing your claim. We'll also throw in a few tips around maximizing your financing should you choose to proceed.

SRED financing of your sr&Ed tax credit is somewhat of a boutique finance industry in Canada. It is very rare that your bank will finance the claim. We certainly don’t agree with that, because in effect it is an account receivable, and they do finance receivables, don’t they??! Anyway, your firm will have to have a strong borrowing relationship with a bank to finance your claim. The reality is that this type of financing is best and more quickly achieving via a sred financing specialist.

Rates for sred financing vary, and factors that affect the rate tend to be size of claim, your company's current financial position ( many sred claimants are early stage, pre revenue, etc ) , as well as the perceived quality of your claim .

A sred loan is not debt per se, that’s important to understand, you are simply monetizing, or ' cash flowing ' one of your receivables, in this case the sred . Sred loans are structured as no payment loans and the final financing charges are simply deducted from the final cheque you receive from our good friends in Ottawa.

Sred financings can be processed, and funded in as little as two weeks - very standard application paperwork is involved, and the main collateral is or courses the sred itself.

Here’s some final tips we promised - have your sred prepared by someone who knows what they are doing, sred consultants are the best in this area as they are specialized. Count on receiving at least a 70% advance on your claim. Also, did you know that under certain conditions your sred can be financed prior to filing?

We’ve e shared some tips and procedures that will allow you to consider financing your claim. If additional cash flow and working capital are important considerations speak to a trusted, credible, and experience business financing advisor to validate your sred loan options.

Isn’t Working Capital Bad For Your ( Business ) Health ?

Understanding And Measuring Business Capital Needs - The Working Capital Conundrum !

Information on how understanding how working capital needs affects for business financial health - Cash Flow 101 !

We can hear our clients now! How possibly could working capital (isn’t that cash flow?) be bad for my firms financial health. Let’s talk about that.

The technical financial folks define working capital as a very basic calculation that even the non financial business owner can do - simply deduct your current liabilities from your current assets ( from your balance sheet statement) and, voila ! Congratulations, you have working capital. Hopefully that number is a positive number, because when it’s negative you're technically insolvent and that's a subject and solution for another day!

Anyway, our working capital number is positive - that’s good, right. Not necessarily, and that’s the premise of our info we share here , because if you have positive working capital your funds are tied up in receivables, inventories and pre paid items .

It is therefore very important to understand what makes up working capital, how you can monetize or cash flow it, and most importantly, but often totally overlooked , how you can measure business capital and working capital .

The essence of measuring your working capital revolves around turnover, days sales outstanding, inventory turns, and payables days outstanding.

The good news is that you can very easily calculate and track these measurements, and we can virtually guarantee they will better assist you to understand why your investment in working capital is very much a teeter totter of good news/bad news.

Do you like to travel?
Money does also, and considers how long it takes for a dollar to travel through your company. From the day you place an order, purchase product, pay for product, bill a receivable, and yes, collect that receivable that total cycle can be easily 200 days, if note more. That’s a lot of travel, so you hopefully can see our premise here that your investment in your working capital accounts is not necessarily a great thing.

Your business is composed primarily of inventory, receivables, and payables, (also fixed assets). We therefore strongly suggest to clients that they understand the turnover and overall return they are getting from these key asset accounts.

You would understand your working capital situation somewhat better if it were not for those pesky issues that you can’t control - business owners and financial managers recognize them well and run into them every day. They are sales growth and decline, your fixed costs that you have to pay and manage no matter what, and any financial distress you may be experiencing from past external factors - i.e. a bad year, etc,

The holy grail of business capital and working capital financing is when you have strong controls on internal asset turnover and at the same time you have access to external working capital via bank lines, asset based lending facility, loans, grants, etc.

We constantly remind clients that if they are turning over their working capital accounts more efficiently all the time its in effect a measure of the true success of your company - think of it, you're buying things, paying supplies on time, and customers are paying you on time and ordering more goods and services. A quick tool for measuring your progress in this area is simply to take your receivables days and inventory days, subtract your payables days outstanding, and if that number is improving , or going down you are winning the 'working capital is bad for your health' premise we have presented.

As a Canadian business owner you are both granting credit and requesting credit (customers and suppliers respectfully). Understanding business capital in this manner will allow you to finance better internally and borrow via banks, finance firms, asset based lenders, etc.

Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced business financing advisor about our ' health’ problem and what your tools and solutions might be for better business success.

SRED Financing - SR&ED Finance Loans in Canada

SR&ED Financing
is your firm's ability to take immediate cash flow and working capital advantage of our SR&ED tax credit claim. This program, (formal name = Scientific Research and Experimental Development) is bar none the best tax incentive program in Canada. Other than being taxable as income the refund you receive from the government is a non repayable grant. What could be better than that?

The irony in this great program is simply that almost 70% of companies in Canada that are eligible for the program do not even apply, let alone receive their funds! It clearly is a source of untapped cash flow and working capital for your Canadian business that should be maximized to the hilt.

The other 30% of Canadian firms who use the program utilize it around their efforts to develop new products and services, building prototypes, and solving technological challenges.

So your Canadian controlled private company utilizes and files SRED filings. Did you know your claim can be financing immediately after you file it, literally the same day. Specialists that work as 'SR&ED consultants are experts in preparing your claim and in Canada your SRED claim can be prepared at your cost - and you keep all the proceeds of the government grant, or alternatively, your claim can be done on a contingency basis, at no cost to yourself, and the consultant usually keeps anywhere from 10-30% of the total refund received.

However most Canadian business owners and their SRED consultants do not know that your claim can be financing, either during the preparation of your claim, (yes, before your file, if you qualify!) or immediately on filing of your claim.

Generally with this type of financing you receive immediately approximately 70% of the value of your claim. The other 30% still comes back you of course, but its simply a bit of a buffer to cover financing costs and any risk that a portion of the claim will be disallowed or clawed back.

When we think in terms of specialty financing we can categorically state that SRED financing is specialty financing in Canada. We urge clients to locate a business financing advisor who has credibility, experience and background in this area.

The SRED financing process is not as complicated as you seem if you are well prepared and have access to good assistance. Its as simply as completing a basic business financing application, ensuring proper back up is in place and valid. That includes info on your company, the SRED claim itself, your previous SRED claims if you have filed previously etc.

The reality is that SRED financing can be completed within 2-3 weeks of starting the process. The beauty of this type of financing is that no payments are made on the SRED loan. In effect you can say that you have factored or discounted the SRED claim. You are simply waiting for your cheque from Ottawa, and are making use of the working capital and cash flow now. That's a solid interim financing strategy for many firms, and that cash can be used for reduction of payables, investments in new equipment, additional staff, etc. The bottom line = any general worthwhile corporate purpose.

In summary, of course ensure you are taking advantage of Canada's Sr&Ed program. Once that is the case you have the option of financing your claim, allowing you to maximize the true benefits of the program, i.e. the recovery of your R&D expenses in the most time efficient manner possible. That's a solid financial strategy.

Leasing Construction Equipment : New & Used !

Wouldn't It Be A Good Idea To Acquire Construction Equipment Assets The Right Way ? !

Information on the benefits and the mechanics of leasing construction equipment in Canada. This is a cost effect manner of acquiring assets you need to run and grow your business

Leasing construction equipment , both new and used, is a huge part of Canada’s equipment financing industry. The fact that used equipment can be financed at satisfactory rates terms and structures is sometimes news to Canadian business owners and financial managers.

The reality is that this type of financing is a somewhat specialized area of finance and we urge clients to seek a trusted, credible and experienced lease and financing consultant or advisor in this area of Canadian business financing.

Used equipment, particularly in the construction industry, (but in reality a variety of other industries) is financed to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

The equipment plays itself out in a variety of different ways – Companies grow, the acquire other firms, some firms go unfortunately, out of business , yet at the same time the values of equipment hold up significantly due to the quality and nature of the products . Naturally we have just gone through one of the most difficult times in the global economy ever, and , as such , for some of the aforementioned reasons there is a variety of equipment for sale and for re financing .

We would point out to clients that it is very prudent to liken the acquisition of used construction and heavy equipment to renewing your mortgage. By knowing you are pre approved at certain rates and structures gives you significant purchase leverage when negotiating a final price. Even though some industries and sectors, geographic and otherwise are in a slump there is still a deal to be made on a variety of heavy equipment.

When you are acquiring used equipment, construction or otherwise, you should be looking for the same type of leases that you would entertain for other business equipment financing. You have, as always, two options – lease to own, known as a capital lease, or a ‘lease to use’, more commonly known as an operating lease. Given the high dollar values of some of the larger equipment it clearly might make sense to entertain an operating lease if that type of lease can be negotiated satisfactorily. That comes of course with off balance sheet flexibility, and, as importantly, the ability to purchase, upgrade or renew at the end of the lease; and that’s your decision at the time, not the lessors!

Just look at the benefits of such financing. If you can derive both productivity and profits from a piece of used equipment, and get financing in place that is satisfactory in overall pricing, terms and structure you have saved many thousands of dollars in purchase price .

All of the traditional flexibility that is associated with lease financing accrues towards used equipment financing also – they include better cash flow management, the ability to control obsolescence, and the ability to put ‘good debt ‘on your balance sheet – i.e. assets that will be used for production and profits. You should also remember that you can negotiate to include soft costs in your used construction equipment financing – they might include warranty, maintenance, delivery and installation.

Years ago the American firm CIT did a study on why contractors and firms leased equipment – the results were very interesting:

Many firms leased because they saw a limited need for the asset – i.e. not a permanent need

Unexpected need for equipment often came up as a driver in lease financing

Interestingly enough cost was never really the major driver in the lease or purchase decision – as you thought it might be of course

Continually upgrading leases was also cited, given the need to stay current and competitive

So whats our bottom line – simply that you should consider the used equipment construction market for asset acquisition when it makes sense – and by working with an expert lease partner you should be able to maximize the benefits of your acquisition from both a financing and productivity viewpoint . That’s solid Canadian business financing sense!
