The alternative to surviving a working capital cash crunch, temporary or permanent is of course not surviving it and losing control of your business from a financial perspective. So let’s address some techniques and solutions for cash flow survival. These focus around accounts receivable and inventory. Think about it, if you have A/R and inventory, these amounts are one step away from liquidity. So how do you monetize these assets on an on going basis, whether they going up or down?


In Canada the most logical solutions to restoring your cash flow normalcy are the following - asset based lending, a working capital facility, and combinations of receivable and inventory and purchase order or contract financing.


True asset based lending facilities are typically for larger facilities of several million dollars or more - they have the ability to double, if not triple your access to working capital. How do they do that? Simply because they margin on an ongoing basis all your A/R and inventory at very high margin rates, and the facility grows as those two asset categories grow. They are the ' best bet ' for surviving a working capital crunch.


Small and medium size firms should look toward working capital facilities that combine A/R and inventory lending, have no fixed upper limit, but usually come with higher financing and borrowing costs.

How Can My Canadian Company Get a SR & ED Tax Credit Loan - Can SR ED's Be Financed?
















Not all Canadian business owners and financial managers are aware of one of the greatest government programs still currently in existence at both the federal and provincial level. The formal name for the program is Scientific Research and Experimental Development program. Most people call it simply the SRED (SR &ED) program; we have also heard many people pronounce it as 'SHRED 'also!

We put Canadian businesses into two categories when we discuss the program - those that don't know about the program period, and those that know about the program but are not aware that their claims can be financed.

SR ED financing is an excellent source of short term cash flow, and allows a company to reap the benefits, in cash of funds that they have put into R&D.

It is probably useful to do a short overview - let's call it a SR ED primer!

The program is administered at the federal and provincial levels of the Canadian government. It is very important to note that the SR ED grant (yes it's non-repayable) is for Canadian private firms only - it does not apply to public corporations the program is applicable literally to almost every type of firm and industry in Canada. A company files it's claim at the same time it files it's year end tax return.

In our experience the majority, we feel almost 95%+ of claims are prepared by an independent third party. They have expertise, credibility, and have a strong knowledge of the program and the government requirements. We would further point out that if a claim is not prepared by a qualified third party then there may be an issue in financing the claim - not always, but sometimes.

Claims can be expensive to process and prepare, and in general the industry has evolved into two types of costs associated with the claim. What are those two cost scenarios?

1. Customer pays a third party in full for time and preparation involved in the claim. The customer reaps the full benefits of the claim when it is processed

2. Customer signs an agreement on a contingency basis, and pays the preparer of the SR ED a portion of the claim when it is approved - bottom line he has no cash outlay and the SR ED consultant is at risk re time and preparation involved in the claim.

Let's now focus on financing of the claim. The financing of the claim is somewhat of a boutique industry in Canada, and requires specialized knowledge around the quality and collateralization of the claim. The Canadian banks, as a rule, with only minor exceptions, do not make SR ED loans.

Claims are financed at approximated 70% of loan to value. What do we mean by that? We mean that loans on SR ED are made to 70% of their combined federal and provincial amount. Example - Customer files a claim for $ 300.000.00. The SR ED loan would be for 70% of that amount: = $210,000.00.

Claims can be financed relatively quickly when working with a qualified financing expert in this area. It certainly is possible to complete a transaction in a couple of weeks, from initial discussions.

Naturally some level of due diligence is required on the firm, and we point out that many firms are in fact total start ups and are filing their claim for the first time. An additional financing note is that first time claims are scrutinized more closely as the customer at that point does not have a track record in this area. Track records help the financing.

In a future article we will discuss further relevant aspects of SR ED financing. Our key take away points here are that the SR ED program is a very viable program and source of cash for Canadian business. Claims can be financed, and are a valuable source of working capital for many Canadian firms.

A significant amount of confusion exists in the Canadian business financing arena around the definition and use of ABL lending . In the context that we are talking about we're focusing on a comprehensive business financing credit arrangement that provides you with a total borrowing facility based on primarily receivables and inventory, but also equipment and real estate when that comes into play .

There are many subsets of abl lending in Canada. The two dominant factors that play a role in theses subsets are size of facility, and single focus financing, such as receivables only. Additional the overall credit quality of your firm (i.e. good, bad and ugly) ultimately drives what type of facility

Can anyone raise their hand and answer why abl loans (by the way they are not loans per se) are deemed by many to be the savior of Canadian business financing. We sure can - its because they have the simply ability to offer financing when traditional bank financing is not available ,and, even to a stronger point, abl loan don’t discriminate when it comes to size of the facility . Generally these facilities range from 250k on the small end to tens of millions of dollars at the high end. Oh, and by the way, many of Canada's largest corporations use this type of financing, unbeknownst to the average follower of Canadian business financing.

So again, whats better for your firm. We have got nothing against traditional bank operating loans, they have served Canada well for a hundred years, however , they can be restrictive when it comes to size of facility, renewals of your facility on different terms, and , most importantly limiting on what can be financed and for how much .

Quick example based on a real world scenario. Manufacturing company 'A' has a bank financing operating facility that margins their receivables to 75% of total value, and inventory to a cap of, let’s say 750k. However, manufacturing company 'A' is growing quickly, requires additional inventory, and has receivable growth commensurate with sales growth. The challenge in a traditional banking arrangement is that the company is restricted in ability to grow commensurate with their working capital needs .Would banks step in. Maybe, possibly, who knows?

However, we can almost guarantee this same type of problem or challenge our company 'A' is facing would be met head on in an ABL lending scenario. Why , simply because abl financing is based on assets, so as the firms inventory and receivable investment grows so does the facility, pretty well automatically .

Many Canadian firms that are smaller and medium in size unfortunately don’t qualify for what we call a true pure play ABL, simply based on deal economics and size of facility and asset categories. Does it end there? Definitely not, as working capital facilities, mini ABL’’s we could call them, are available that finance a combo of A/R and inventory, accounts receivable only (typically called factoring financing), with potential to add on purchase order financing when that makes sense. Our mini ABL’’s, aka working capital facilities are priced significantly higher that true asset based lines of credit, but offer the same flexibility and access to capital .

So, is there a bottom line? The old saying' the trend is your friend ' is applicable - more and more firms are investigating abl lending and benchmarking it against bank loans. Do not, we repeat, do not investigate this type of financing if you have all the business credit you need and have no challenges in working capital financing and business growth! SR and ED Or SRED - Call It What You Want But Take Advantage of SRED Funding Or Factoring!












Semantics we tell clients. You can call it you SRED claim, your Shred claim ( they use that a lot also! ) or your SR and ED claim. You can even throw in an ampersand and correctly write it as SR&ED.

But there is only one bottom line, which is, why you aren't considering financing your claim. Putting our semantics aside many business owners and financial managers are inquiring as to the financeability of their claim. More often that not they have been told by their bank that this type of claim is not financeable, and even though you are showing it on your books as a receivable it cannot be margined for working capital and cash flow.

Two words. They are wrong, as Sr Ed claims can be financed in a large number of situations. They are financed utilizing Sr Ed Canadian business financing advisors who are experienced in this niche area of Canadian finance.

We believe it's always good to recap the basic and set the stage for our financing discussion. The program is of course a federal program, in concert with the provinces, that encourages small, medium, and dare we say it, large corporations to conduct research on products, process, etc.

How committed is the government to this program ask clients? Very we say, given that approximately 4 Billion dollars are doled out each year to the 1/3 of the companies that take advantage of the program. That of course infers that 2/3 of eligible customers in fact don't use the program. We have heard a litany of reasons around why they don't from clients - they include: we're too busy, its sounds complicated, we don't want to get audited, our r&d spending is not large enough, etc. These firms would simply be better off keeping it simple and saying, ' No we don't want funds that are non repayable that re -imburse us for our r&d', because that's in effect what they are saying.

If you have a valid claim prepared by either an experienced internal party, but more preferably a true SRED consultant then you can finance your claim. Funds for approximately 70% of the claim value are provided to your firm with the collateral of course being the SR ED receivable. Of course you can wait for 3, 6, or 12 months to receive your funds, but why not consider putting that valuable cash flow and working capital back to work in your business.

Clients who finance Sr &ed claims typically use the funds for general working capital purposes, further r&d, new equipment, marketing, etc. The bottom line is that you choose the use of the funds. And by the way, that other 30% of your claim is still yours of course, it's returned to your firm, less financing costs, when the government sends your cheque. And get the news get any better, but no payments are made on the SR Ed loan, interest simply accrues and is calculated at the end of the financing.

Is the Lack of Cash Flow and Working Capital My Firm's Doomsday?











Business owners and financial managers know the importance of cash flow and working capital as generated by their accounts receivable and inventory accounts. What is the ultimate effect of a lack of cash flow and working capital - we know the answer - it is a business failure.

Business owners can utilize a financial analysis technique that finance textbooks call the 'DOOMSDAY RATIO '. What is that ratio and what is its significance?

The Doomsday ratio is calculated by the following easy formula:

Cash divided by Current Liabilities.


This is one of the most powerful and effective solvency ratios that a business owner can utilize. Business people might be aware of two other similar ratios, the current ratio and the quick ratio. The current ratio included the firm's current assets, including accounts receivable and inventory. The Quick ratio did the same but excluded inventory.

The business owner can quickly see that the doomsday ratio focuses solely on Cash! We can call it a very demanding ratio because it focuses solely on the liquid gold within the company, cash! As liquid as your receivables and inventory are, they aren't cash yet, and everyone knows the day to day business challenges of converting receivables and goods into a final cash customer payment.

Really the best way to look at the Doomsday ratio is to view it as an ongoing measure of the firms cash 'buffer'. The bottom lien is that it will show the business owner what 'cushion' of cash the firm has. Business owners could even choose to monitor the ratio daily, as it could very well warn against impending shortages of working capital.

Many business owners know that it is also not productive to carry cash on hand, particularly in today's low interest rate environment. So it makes common sense that the doomsday ratio may in fact be less than one, but at least we have a number that, on an ongoing basis, we can monitor.

Each business over time has a philosophy and business practice around how much cash is kept on hand.
