WELCOME !

Thanks for dropping in for some hopefully great business info and on occasion some hopefully not too sarcastic comments on the state of Business Financing in Canada and what we are doing about it !

In 2004 I founded 7 PARK AVENUE FINANCIAL. At that time I had spent all my working life, at that time - Over 30 years in Commercial credit and lending and Canadian business financing. I believe the commercial lending landscape has drastically changed in Canada. I believe a void exists for business owners and finance managers for companies, large and small who want service, creativity, and alternatives.

Every day we strive to consistently deliver business financing that you feel meets the needs of your business. If you believe as we do that financing solutions and alternatives exist for your firm we want to talk to you. Our purpose is simple: we want to deliver the best business finance solutions for your company.

Working Capital Finance Solutions & Bank Alternatives !

Benefits Of  Financing Alternatives Vs. Traditional Bank Loans

What Is Working Capital? How To Find Alternatives To Bank Financing

Canadian business owners and financial managers seeking working capital finance by banks or other sources are generally experiencing growth in sales and profits. That's the good news, which is of course offset by the fact that this type of success requires additional working capital and newer ways to finance your business. Putting working capital to work enhances your firms value when return on capital is higher than your cost of financing!

Liquidity has become the name of the game and ' cash is king' even today never seems like a worn cliché.  Past studies by the Conference Board of Canada indicated that the key worries of business owners were working capital cash flow. (Also referenced were ' regulatory issues and competition'). The bottom line is: business owners and their financial managers want options

So you have sales and assets... but can those assets generate working capital finance by banks or other alternatives?

The ability to secure funding at critical times is always challenging for entrepreneurs, even in established companies. That one of the biggest reasons that alternative funding has risen to so much prominence. A wide variety of finance solutions is now available to the Canadian business owner - solutions that involve cash flow financing via the monetizing of current assets such as inventory and receivables, monetizing future sales ( merchant advance/short term working capital loans), equipment financing and sale-leasebacks, and traditional cash flow term loans, also known as ' mezzanine financing '.

Somewhat remarkably many businesses have even turned to online borrowing solutions in Canada. Canadian chartered banks have also participated in the online borrowing industry, although reviews of customer experiences in business journals such as the GLOBE &  MAIL and NATIONAL POST have met with some lacklustre customer experience. Although approvals are relatively fast interest rates and borrowing costs and terms of repayment have left many customers wanting better solutions.

In online borrowing models, including peer-to-peer loans significant emphasis is based on owner personal credit history. Alternative funding options are continually changing in the digital space and borrowers are well advised to speak to a business financing consultant in this area. It is safe to say that business owners can't be expected to call and interview all the different online lenders as it relates to loan info, cost of financing, and loan criteria.

The main appeal of short term working capital loans is the emphasis on fast approval, no requirement for additional collateral, and less emphasis on personal credit scores and net worth.

The bottom line is that businesses who choose to grow and that require external funding want to deal with reputable lenders/financing partners. Unfortunately many Canadian firms can't meet the criteria under traditional bank lending policies , even though financing needs are critical to their business.

For working capital purposes it's all about ' current assets ' which include typically receivables and inventory. As you invest in those two assets to generate sales your working capital needs go up, and your ability to manage and turn over those assets plays a key role in the sourcing of working capital by banks, and non-bank institutions.

You should not be afraid to enter into traditional or alternative working capital solutions if you have properly managed current assets - you are simply monetizing for liquidity, and that's rarely a bad thing.  Business owners know cash goes down when you are expanding sales as you invest in assets and resources.

So are Canadian chartered banks the solutions to your working capital needs. Probably, possibly, maybe is our answer, meaning that if your firm is capable of meeting bank criteria for a revolving line of credit your needs typically can be met. Of more and more concern to our clients is their ability to not be able to generate sufficient financing for the sister of receivables, aka inventory!

That then takes us into an alternative for bank financing, which is the fast growing area of asset based financing, in particular asset based lines of credit. These facilities cost more, but give you total margining of the market value of your receivables, inventory, and , guess what, we'll throw in equipment and real estate if you want to temporarily margin them for working capital. And remember, your balance sheet is not taking on debt when you enter into either a bank or alternative asset based line of credit, you're simply monetizing your financials for cash flow.

The reality is that alternative methods of financing are growing more popular - yes they are more expensive, but if your firm generates sufficient margins and return on equity your ability to tap into virtually unlimited working capital can prove to be a very positive experience.

The reality of working capital finance by banks or alternative methods is always the same - you need to determine your asset turnover, there will always be times when you need a bulge in inventory and A/R to fund your growth.

Solutions for alternative working capital cash flow include:

Non bank asset based lines of credit  - These facilities help to smooth out what the pro's call the 'operating cycle ' of your business , assisting those times where cash inflows don't match outflows based on a/r and inventory turns. As you invest in current asset categories of receivables and inventory you experience a decline in cash reserves. Businesses with seasonality or ' bulges' of sales activity require solid business credit lines. 'ABL' ( Asset Based Lending ) lending is true collateralized lending.

The operating cycle may cause businesses to experience shortfalls for a specific period. There are numerous reasons why this can happen, but one underlying reason is that a business may extend credit to its customers to attract more business. The more credit a business extends, the less cash is available during that time. That’s why a line of credit can help these businesses with their cash flow management.

A/R Financing/ factoring (We recommend Confidential Receivable Financing)

Accounts receivable finance is one of the most highly utilized and successful forms of non bank working capital financing. This type of financing allows you to, in effect , sell your invoices to generate cash flow. Many business people don't understand this type of funding is not a loan, in effect its a transfer and cash flowing of your asset - A/R!

So pricing is not an interest rate per se, but a discount to the total value of your invoice, typically in the 1-1.5% range.  We recommend confidential a/r financing, allowing you to bill and collect your own accounts with no intrusion of any finance firm into your customer relationship.

Sr & ed Tax Credit Bridge Loans

Sale leaseback solutions

Inventory & Purchase Order Financing

Loans for professional practices ( Doctors/Dentists/Lawyer/Accountants, etc )  - These loans may involve financing needs around equipment, marketing,  or in some cases acquiring another practice. Expansion for business real estate is also a common need in this area.

Short Term Working Capital Loans ( aka ' Merchant Advances ) - As we have discussed to a certain degree these online/peer-to-peer solutions became ultra-popular after the 2008 recession and became a strong competitor to invoice discounting finance. Loans are typically based on a percentage of annual sales, typically between 10-20%. Although readily accessible we consult to clients around the pros and cons of this financing, one issue being higher interest rates.

It is important to understand the financial concept of matching when it comes to working capital finance solutions. These sources of capital should be used for day to day operating needs.  Serious mistakes occur when these types of solutions are used for long term need such as investments in equipment, r&d,  marketing, etc.

At 7 Park Avenue Financial we find that many new clients are confused around some of the terminology around the ' working capital loan '. Also noted is that certain loans in this category are secured, others are not.

Is Alternative Financing Right For Your Firm?

Business financing is a challenge, so owners must invest their own time, or work with a trusted advisor to evaluate options. Companies with good sales revenues, profits and clean balance sheets will have more options, but we have demonstrated that commercial lenders providing alternative finance options are plentiful and offer numerous cash flow solutions to your short term needs. If your firm has sales, and or assets you have non bank funding options.

Liquidity, that's what it's all about. Speak to a trusted, experienced and credible Canadian business financing advisor in order to ensure your traditional and alternative business financing options are first, clear, and second, available!

Is The Asset Based Credit Line And Loan A Threat To Bank Business Lines Of Credit In Canada . You Decide After This!

Is There A New Triple Threat In Canadian Business Financing?

Information on the business line of credit in Canada . Differences in bank and ABL asset based loan facilities are worth knowing for the Canadian business owner / manager

Not all business owners and financial managers in Canada are familiar with the new (relatively speaking )kid on the block in Canada , the business line of credit know as the ABL , which is basically an asset based loan , non bank in nature .

Is the ABL a real ' triple threat ' when it comes to the alternative, the bank commercial credit facility? We'll let you decide but we’re quite sure you will agree there is a market for both as you will soon see.

Oh, and by the way, the banks agree with us, because many of them, unbeknownst to many, offer their clients both alternatives. Talk about a secret we have let you in on!

So if the ultimate goal of both the ABL and the bank facility is to provide you with revolving credit, how in fact are they different? One way is simply the focus - for the bank its on cash flow and profits, while the ABL facility focuses on... you guessed it, just assets ! While our chartered banks view collateral as a back up to their credit decision the Asset based lender views your assets, the collateral, as pretty well the only back up plan.

The way bank credit lines and ABL facilities behave is partly driven by regulations. That is to say that our strong Canadian banking system is driven by rules and regulations around the amount of funds they have, what they can lend, who they can lend to . Given the fact that our banks are all pretty well public corporations on the stock market we can further imagine all the visibility around their lending that that garners!

And the asset based lender then? Well we are certainly not portraying them as drunken cowboys doing what they want and when they want, but the reality is they are not regulated, are more often than not private firms, and make their own risk ratings and decisions based on management experience and their opinion of your assets - typically A/R, inventory, equipment, and even real estate. All of those components become part of your business credit line.

Here's another little surprise we'll share with you today. When bank loans go bad they are placed in a ' non performing ' part of the banks books, a special place known as ... you guessed it ' SPECIAL LOANS '. Do you know who often refinances these loans and pays out the bank? Surprise! It's the asset based lender!

So when a company is consuming too much cash, rather than generating it the asset based business line of credit is a great business credit solution. So all of a sudden historical cash flow and profits, critical to a bank, are a non issue when you are looking for an ABL facility. Big difference!

Do we criticize our banks for their behavior .Some might, but not us, because Canadian chartered bank solutions deliver the lowest cost based on the risk they are prepared to take.

That brings us of course to pricing. In fact certain ABL business lines of credit are in fact 100% competitive, even lower than bank offerings. However, the majority are in fact priced higher, with the offset being the tremendous amount of additional liquidity and working capital your firm achieves when monetizing assets via an asset based ABL loan.

So, co-existing. Absolutely. Just be prepared to recognize the price, limitations and benefits that your firm is prepared to take one when looking for a true business line of credit. Seek out and speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can assist you with your business credit decision.

Without an ABL Lending And Loan Facility Financing Where Will You Be Tomorrow ? A Canadian Non - Bank Alternative !

A Formula For Canadian Commercial Business Financing

Information on ABL lending in Canada . How can investigating this financing loan facility today via a non bank working capital solution secure the future of your Canadian operating financing needs

Concerned about your ability to achieve business operating financing over the long term - if that’s the case an ABL lending solution might be the alternative to a traditional bank financing facility .

We think the whole issue revolves around the term alternative - and we mean that in two ways. First of all from a pure technical reason ABL ( Asset Based Lending ) is in fact ' alternative financing ' , a term that has become very much in vogue since 2008 -2009 when the Canadian business financing landscape changed dramatically due to the global financial recession.

And secondly, it’s just basically another word for choice and we guarantee you that you need choices in your business financing decisions.
So, can you ignore asset financing and let other firms, including your competitors use ABL as their new choice of operating financing? Of course you can, but if this type of loan or facility (it’s not a loan per se) has the ability to virtually guarantee you access to financing for all future growth we think it’s remiss of you not to consider it. That’s just our humble opinion.

The bottom line is that this type of asset based line of credit financing facility is almost always tailored to your specific needs. It provides you with the flexibility to have a customized arrangement around the borrowing power you can generate via... guess what, Assets!

And what are those assets? Commonly they are receivables, inventories, and in some cases as an add on, fixed assets or real estate. It’s simply the monetization of those assets based on realistic values (often achieved by an appraisal)that gives you al alternative , and by the way, almost always larger ! operating facility .

If as a Canadian business owner or financial manager you're concerned about the future of financing for your firm and you have special needs or situations then ABL is probably the answer to your alternative, which is losing out on growth opportunities or having to look elsewhere for debt or outside equity.

We mention debt because you do have alternatives to ABL lending such as cash flow term loans, sub debt, etc but surely the ability to monetize assets to the maximum and not borrow relative to the balance sheet is appealing?

We've referenced the ability of your firm to secure the future of your financing and growth via an ABL lending and financing facility. Clients who want to make this drastic change to non bank financing always ask a question that could generally be summarized as ' whats in it for us '. The answer is pretty simple, increase cash flow for firms that have assets, both current and fixed, that aren’t being monetized now. Although you might end up reporting more on the monthly values of those assets most clients are happy to know that these reports are no longer tied to covenants and ratios, etc as required by traditional Canadian chartered bank financing. Issues of seasonality in your working capital, or being flexible to take advantage of new opportunities (including acquisitions by the way) make ABL lending a solid ' loan ' financing facility alternative choice.

So whats the bottom line in the future of your operating financing? And where will you be tomorrow in your business financing ? Its simply that you should investigate asset based lending facilities, non bank in nature, as a method of creating long term access to working capital and growth ability . Speak to a trusted, credible, and experienced Canadian business financing advisor for the lowdown on ABL financing.

ABL Lenders In Canada : How To Solve The Hunt On Your Business Credit Line & Banking Dilemma

Feeling A Tad ‘ Underbanked’ These Days ? Here’s A Call To Action

OVERVIEW – Information on how Canadian business can access the business credit line . These facilities are offered by bank and commercial ABL lenders and provide a constant cash flow source for the business

The business credit line requirement often has owners/ financial mgrs feeling somewhat ' underbanked’. This type of facility is only offered by either a bank or ABL lenders. (Asset Based Lending). Take us up on our ' call to action '
and let's end that hunt for that constant cash flow dilemma that you face. Let's dig in.

Let's cover off some basics. These types of facilities allow you daily access to capital as you need it. It's a ' pay as you go' type of borrowing that only charges interest as you access the credit - with the ability to pay it down all the time, typically daily as you collect receivables, etc.

Typical uses of the credit lines include payrolls, marketing, inventory purchases, and most importantly - filling the time gap between sales and collections!

Two key offerings are available in Canada - Banks and Non bank lenders. Banks offer secured and ' unsecured' revolving facilities - typically non bank lenders are fully secured by security agreements covering collateral assets such as A/R, inventory, and often equipment, and of course owner guarantees. The best use of the credit line is when your company pays down and fluctuates the facility regularly.

Typically bank lines are not available to newer or start up businesses, and they are not a source of covering your financial losses/business errors.

While the ' unsecured' credit line is highly appealing you need to understand that your overall business record and financials must be very strong and at a certain point based on dollar requirements typically security is requested. You must demonstrate profits, good financials, and a command of your business. (Financial statements tell almost all about whether you're ' in command ‘)

Key point: Term loans are fixed in nature and usually are for specific assets. They are NOT credit lines per se, the latter having more flexibility. Note however that credit lines almost always have a limit!

To access the right amount of revolving credit facility you should be able to produce on an ongoing basis proper schedules of A/R, inventory, and other obligations your business has committed to. A cash flow forecast is ALWAYS helpful. You want to be able to demonstrate how and why the credit lines will assist you in running and growing your business.

While bank facilities are ' lowest cost ' they are more challenging to secure. Asset based lenders offer more credit but come at a much higher cost -although those costs have come down substantially in the last few years due to the highly competitive nature of the business.

If you're feeling ' underbanked' these days and want to access more, or better suited credit facilities seek out and speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can help you achieve the flexibility and ' gap covering' that your business requires.

Business Cash Flow Is A Cause For Alarm ? Here’s One Solution In Addition To Bank And Finance Companies Alternatives

Separating The Wheat From The Chaff In Cash Flow Financing alternatives

Information on 2 kinds of business cash flow solutions. Finance companies and banks , and your own management can accelerate working capital inflows

BUSINESS CASH FLOW
or the lack thereof can provide some hard lessons for the Canadian business owner / financial manager. How does the owner/manager separate the ' wheat from the chaff ' when it comes to solutions offered by finance companies and banks. What other solution can be addressed, outside of seeking external financing? Let's dig in.

You won't find too many business people disagreeing with the fact that cash flow and access to working capital is important. It's easy to see the cash going out, it's more challenging to manage the cash coming in.

When it comes to financing solutions to address our subject manner they are more numerous than you might think. Canadian commercial finance companies offer a plethora of solutions outside of bank finance. They include:

Receivable financing

Inventory Financing

PO/Supply chain financing

SR&ED Tax credit bridge loans

Asset based lines of credit

Mezzanine financing

Royalty financing

Generally non bank solutions cost more, but it can also be quite easily said they are more attainable than Canadian commercial bank approval for your financing needs. Borrowers in the SME (small to medium enterprise) commercial finance sector must have a least a couple years of business success when it comes to accessing bank credit.

If your company can demonstrate it has real financial statements, profits, some equity in the business, and reasonable personal credit histories of the owners ... well... from the banks perspective... You're in. Bank credit lines are great solutions for the proverbial ' overdraft '.

So we have tabled two external paths in financing cash flow. But wait! There's More! as our favourite K-TEL announcer used to say. In reality if you are growing at a modest rate your access to cash flow can easily come from within.

From within? Simply speaking it’s about focusing on better asset turnover in the areas of inventory and accounts receivable. Putting a simple system in place to verify and manage your day’s sales outstanding in A/R, or your inventory turnover will allow you to bring cash in more quickly.

We referenced your business growing at a ' modest rate'. In reality if you are in high growth mode, or have large , perhaps seasonal , bulges in your business you will most likely be forced to address external financing , no matter how well you manger current assets. That’s simply because sales growth is hungry, it eats cash as you build up A/R an inventory and wait for clients to pay.

Often the best solution for a company that can’t access bank credit but has solid growth possibilities is in fact asset based lending. This solution, typically via commercial finance companies, margins inventory and A/R on an ongoing basis, giving you all the business cash flow you need.

If you business is asset intensive it's important also to consider asset financing solutions that won't deplete working capital. That typically involves looking at a lease financing or sale leaseback solution.

If you're looking to separate wheat from chaff in business cash flow alternatives seek out and speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can assist you with your firms growth needs.

Credit Line For Business ? Actually You Have 2 Choices – Bank Or ABL

An Update From The Holy Cow Department On Business Credit Choices

OVERVIEW – Information on the credit line for business. Two alternatives exist for revolving credit , bank line or ABL asset based lines of credit . Here’s the differences

A Credit Line for Business .
Occasionally a client will say to us ' Holy Cow ' I didn’t know that! It turns out ' that ' refers to the fact that it turns out a number of business owners/ financial managers don't know they have two choices in revolving credit facilities for their daily operations. One is the Canadian chartered bank solution; the other is the Asset Based Credit solution, known simply by the term ' ABL'. Let's dig in.

Canadian businesses use credit lines for working capital and cash flow. This types of borrowing in effect funds your ' current assets ', typically A/R and inventory. Because no business in Canada runs on a straight line when it comes to the ups and downs of sales, collections, etc credit lines address those ' bulges' in our businesses.

Two solutions, as we have noted becomes your ' choice' for the business credit line. The first is the Canadian chartered bank, the other is a non bank commercial financing facility known as ' asset based credit ‘.

How do these facilities compare in price, which most clients focus in on immediately? The reality - if your company is established, growing, has profits and a clean balance sheet and is of a decent size the costs of these two facilities are in effect ' neck in neck '. At this point everyone wants your banking business and you're in charge of who gets it. Not a bad situation to be in.

Unfortunately we very rarely meet clients in the Canadian business financing landscape that have the ability to be 'driving the bus'
when it comes to addressing financing needs. Of course large private corporations, public companies and subsidiaries of multi nationals have the option to demand the most facilities at the lowest cost. It just turns out that in Canada that seems to only cover 5% of the companies who need financing.

Because of that ' size' breakdown ABL asset based credit facilities tend to cost more. The reason couldn’t be simpler - it’s that the commercial finance firms offering this credit are in fact borrowing from banks... to lend to your firm!

While any business can theoretically ( key word = theoretically '!) obtain a bank business credit line, secured or unsecured , the ABL credit line typically works best for facilities in excess of at least 250k . Upper limits can of course range into the millions and tens of millions.

One key point in the choosing of which facility makes sense for your firm is the fact that ABL facilities tend to, 99.9% of the time, create more borrowing power for your firm. Simply speaking receivables and inventory are margined higher, and you have the ability to throw your fixed assets into the mix, borrowing against their value when you need it.

When your firm is banked by a Canadian chartered bank a strong element of trust exists between your company and the bank. You’ve passed with flying colors the key requisites of a good commercial bank facility - profits, clean financials, good cash flow, and the ability to meet ratios and covenants required by our regulated bank system in Canada.

Many clients for whom we originate bank financing simply have to report annually, or in some cases monthly on their borrowing needs and financial results. The ABL lender is more generous, and, no surprise, more cautious.
So while your borrowing ability increases you tend to be reporting more often on asset values of your firm. In our experience this just makes your firm a better ' manager of assets ' so that's hardly a bad thing.

If you're uncertain about which business credit line works for your company seek out and speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can assist you with a credit line for business that makes sense for your company's borrowing needs.

Navigating The Bank Business Credit Line Vs. ABL Credit Facility Dilemma

Shopping For A Business Credit Line? Here’s The No Haggle Facts You Need To Know

OVERVIEW – .Information on the bank business credit line . How does the business owner/manager compare this financing with an ABL ( asset based lending ) credit facility

The business credit line in Canada. Should your firm go with a bank or ABL credit facility? What we find most interesting is that a solid majority of business owners / managers didn’t even know there was a debate going on! So let's lay out some hard facts on solutions and options you have when you're on the search for a business credit facility to facilitate options and growth.

The day to day reality is that the ABL facility is gaining a lot of traction in the race for your company's daily borrowing requirements. Although the term ABL is used by many in a variety of circumstances here we're talking about the revolving business line of credit secured by the assets of the business. The way in which this differs from a bank facility is really what leads many businesses to investigate ABL. No one can deny though that Canadian chartered bank financing is perceived by almost all as lowest cost, and flexible.

When your company has assets, or is ' asset rich' but cash flow poor the ABL option is a solid solution. Rather than focusing on conservative margining of receivables and low inventory borrowing capacity , covenants, personal guarantees, outside collateral, cash flow debt service ratios , etc . ! .. The ABL business credit line focuses solely on assets and maximizing your borrowing power to the maximum possible

We should also recognize that our chartered banks are regulated and provide the cornerstone for Canada's finance needs at consumer and commercial levels ; however some of the constraints that come with that limit the Canadian business borrower .

Two technical points come out of our information above. First of all owner guarantees are in fact required on ABL deals also, it’s just that in our opinion much less emphasis is placed on them. Secondly, our Canadian banks are no slouches! They recognize a good thing when they see it and many have adopted niche divisions within the bowels of the bank to address ABL needs. We will leave it to our clients and others to determine whether policy and philosophy differ internally between commercial bankers and their ABL counterparts. If you get the drift!

Bank and ABL facilities are similar in that they collateralize receivables and inventories to permit the drawing of working capital. The more A/R and inventory you have the more working capital assets you're committing to our balance sheet. Monetizing them is the role of the bank and ABL facility. There is also no difference in how borrowing bases are calculated in each type of facility, bank and ABL. Standard ‘borrowing base' certificates are used that monitor the inflows and outflows of collections, inventory turnover, sales generated, etc.

One significant difference in bank and ABL facilities is that the asset based line of credit typically uses a lock box that allows for control of inflows of cash from your ABL lender. The reason? Simple. Typical ABL lenders aren’t banks and they use the lock box as the efficient mechanism to monitor the ups and downs of your revolving facility.

Borrowing power is typically significantly increased in ABL lending. A/R comes in at 90% (versus bank 75%) and inventory, on balance, is always leveraged higher than the bank. The downside, if you call it one, to the ABL credit line is that you're doing more monthly reporting on A/R, inventory, payables, etc. Its true ' asset monitoring '. Many bank credit lines are redone and reviewed in a significant manner annually, often with no visit to your premises. What a difference in the two !

If you want the facts to be able to weigh in on the debate of Chartered bank credit line versus ABL borrowing seek out and speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can assist you with your borrowing needs for day to day working capital.

P.S. The ABL credit facility is , 95% of the time more expensive – but what could you do with all the business borrowing you need to generate sales and create more profits ?

Is The Asset Based Credit Line And Loan A Threat To Bank Business Lines Of Credit In Canada . You Decide After This!

Is There A New Triple Threat In Canadian Business Financing

OVERVIEW – Information on the business line of credit in Canada . Differences in bank and ABL asset based loan facilities are worth knowing for the Canadian business owner / manager

Not all business owners and financial managers in Canada are familiar with the new (relatively speaking )kid on the block in Canada , the business line of credit known as the ABL , which is basically an asset based loan , non bank in nature .

Is the ABL a real ' triple threat '

when it comes to the alternative, the bank commercial credit facility?

Well we are certainly not portraying them as drunken cowboys

doing what they want and when they want, but the reality is they are not regulated, are more often than not private firms, and make their own risk ratings and decisions based on management experience and their opinion of your assets - typically A/R, inventory, equipment, and even real estate.

Liquidity Problems? Cash Flow Challenges? Bank Problem? Here’s Your Next Step

Solutions To Big Financial Dilemmas

Information on solutions for Canadian firms who have cash flow challenges or a problem at the bank. Answers for liquidity problems .

Liquidity problems and cash flow challenges plague thousands of Canadian business owners and financial managers. A lot of this challenge revolves around a company's inability to properly access bank financing in Canada. If that's the case what is the next step then?

We think that next step understands your alternatives, ensuring you understand why you are in a liquidity crisis, i.e. that cash strapped feeling, and finally understanding what might get you back on the right course at the bank.

As we have stated in the past Canadian chartered banks are the first ' go to ' when it comes to securing capital and Canadian business financing. Yet many business owners often find that the bank is either not suited or pre-disposed to solving their cash flow and working capital challenges.

Is there an easy way to a business owner of finance manager to assess the overall probability of achieving bank financing? For our purposes it comes down to your ability to understand 4 key issues. What are they?

First of all, as a general rule you have to be able to show profitability. We can't count the number of firms we meet who are in either a bad year financially or in many cases in the throes of a turnaround back to profitability. Unfortunately in general that doesn’t count at the bank. Banks take the approach that you will pay the loans or working capital financing back from profits. If you can’t demonstrate that there is an immediate obstacle to bank financing success.

Your firms overall collateral position is the 2nd focus from a bank perspective. Certain types of collateral are more preferred than others. They include real estate, receivables, uncollateralized equipment, etc. In general inventory is rarely viewed as appropriate collateral by the bank.

The third focus from the bank is your overall balance sheet. Aside from ensuring it balances..!! .. you must have the right combo of debt and equity. Is there a rule of thumb in this area? Typically the answer is that you must have a dollar of equity in your firm for every 2 dollars in debt.

Finally, is there anything more uncomfortable than the issue of personal guarantees? It's all about ' putting it on the line ‘, which of course many business people are reluctant to do. Your logic is of course that you incorporated to avoid guarantees, and that there should be some risk sharing. Again, that’s your view, not the banks.

We do believe, and have seen that in many cases a strong financing proposal might eliminate all or at least part of a guarantee, so be prepared to address this issue delicately and properly.

Although Canadian chartered banks are among the absolute best in financial strength, management, services and infrastructure it's of course still easy to cast dispersion and doubt on their stated goals of helping Canadian businesses, particularly small and medium business .

So when you or the Canadian chartered banking system have lost faith in each other what’s next? The reality is that many non-bank institutions and independent commercial finance firms provide a variety of cash flow solutions to your business. They include non bank asset based lines of credit, receivable financing, equipment financing and sale leasebacks, and supply chain and tax credit financing. And these solutions work, and in many cases compete directly with bank offerings.

Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can assist you in identifying the next step in Canadian business financing alternatives for your firm.
