Early Warning Signs You Need A Canadian ABL Asset Based Finance Facility Line Of Credit

Information on ASSET BASED FINANCING

As a business owner or financial manager you want to be able to ensure that a business line of credit has the ability to assist your firm before, during and after serious financial challenges occur. That's where the ABL asset based finance facility comes in.
In a perfect world (we know it's not) you want to be able to detect financial challenges, understand why they happen, and then implement a solution to avoid them. Understanding the problem (or problems) allows you to make the difficult decisions to continue your business successfully.

So what kind of problems can in fact your business run into. From our experience some are obvious and others not so obvious. And more importantly is there one specific business strategy; in our case today the ABL asset based line of credit that can in fact help you execute the turnaround.

There are probably 5 major early warning signs that your firm might need an alternative financing solution.
So what are some of those early warning signals? They are as follows:

1. Too much short term debt
2. You're trapped in a vicious cash flow cycle
3. You've accumulated current assets that have little or no value (example: obsolete inventories, poor receivables)
4. Your investment in fixed assets has put a major strain on your liquidity
5. Your firm is trying to find itself as it struggles to makes sales projections without the proper assets and financing to back up that growth

So whether your company has purposely created some of these challenges or whether external market forces have the good news in fact is there is a solution, and the one we are recommending today is the ABL facility. It's a business line of credit like no other.
The ABL business line of credit differs from a bank facility in that you have the ability to margin, at very solid levels your current and fixed assets, all in the form of a revolving business line of credit.

Typically the liquidity provided by this facility gives you access to much more cash flow and working capital, and at the same time isn't punishing your firm by forcing you to totally focus on meeting ratios, covenants, and even provide outside collateral.

That is to say the ABL revolver facility allows you to continue to operate, probably with much more liquidity in spit of your capital structure, your historical challenges or financial losses, etc.

In Canada ABL facilities are typically provided by non regulated commercial finance firms. The ultimate irony we've observed over the years is that the Canada's chartered banks themselves, recognizing limitations of traditional facilities, have themselves even ventured into this ' non- bank ' financing idea. Now that's business irony.

If you want a solid insight into some of the early warning signs that your current financing strategies aren't working speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor about the possible solution to those upcoming or existing challenges.

Achieve the Impossible With ABL ? How The Asset Based Line Of Credit Facility Creates Financing

Information On Asset Based Financing For Canadian Business

Why do we maintain ABL financing achieves the impossible? For us, it seems pretty simple. It's that just one type of Canadian business financing, the asset based line of credit facility , can successfully address, and answer ' YES ' to the following questions:

Is Your Firm viewed as high risk by other more traditional institutions such as Canadian chartered banks?

Do you wish to acquire a competitor or another firm?

Do you need interim financing while in the stages of a ' turnaround'?

Are you experiencing ' hyper growth ' without the necessary financing to handle that growth?

Are you considering a bankruptcy/ receivership or in one now?

Doesnt it seems incredible that one unique method of financing can address those 5 issues, or is it just us that's impressed? Hopefully not.

ABL finance has gradually grown in popularity in Canada; we're often surprised why it has not grown faster. The reality is that some of the largest companies in Canada, both public and private now utilize this type of financing. Even more interesting, and somewhat ironic is that Canadian banks have boutique divisions that are also offering this method of finance.

We have often felt though that in the case of the banks there arent to many differences in some of the credit criteria, which is great for pricing and size of the facility, but less so for approval!

So how do asset based financings in fact address the 5 business concerns we profiled earlier. It's actually pretty simple as a concept. In essence it's a line of credit facility that bundles all your assets into one revolving line of credit. We can't over emphasize the word ' assets ' - that’s the strength of the financing. In the case of ABL its not about ratios, covenants, outside collateral, high emphasis on personal guarantees... its just about... you guessed it .. ‘Assets’!

As the levels of your financing expand you are in a position to borrow against these rising assets due to sales expansion, etc. Naturally it goes without saying that the margining of these assets is what your new found liquidity is all about. For a starter A/R and inventory is margined at typically 90% and 30-70% respectively. That liquidity is further enhanced by allowing you to borrow against equipment and real estate within that same facility.

In Canada facilities such as this typically start at 250k and go to tens of millions of dollars. And they do address all of the 5 situations we have mentioned.

Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor on how an ABL asset based line of credit facility just might be what you need ... today!

Take Charge Of Your Business Asset Finance Today Via A Revolving ABL Credit Facility

Information About Asset Based Lending In Canada

We meet a lot of business owners that say they don't necessarily feel ' in charge ' when it comes to business asset finance and their ability to secure a proper revolving line of credit.

ABL credit, i.e. the asset based line of credit via a non bank facility is one way the Canadian business owner can take charge and regain control o their business financing needs .

Asset based lenders exist in a wide variety of forms in Canada... today we're focusing on the true asset based lender that provides, outside the bank environment, business lines of credit .

Where it gets a little confusing for Canadian business is that some day to day terms are intermingled to make this form of finance confusing to some. Trust us, its not confusing!

Hopefully even we can be forgiven for contributing to some of that confusion sometimes, as we have positioned ABL Credit as a non bank solution. But in reality even some of the banks participate in this type of finance via separate boutique divisions within the chartered banks. It's at that time its important to know who to deal with and why.

True asset based lines of credit revolve around one thing, the ultimate liquidation of collateral. Simply speaking the security and liquidity in the business asset finance LOC focuses on the underlying collateral that you're borrowing against. As we have noted in the past that collateral consists of receivables, inventory and equipment for the most part. (Real estate can also be added in sometimes.)

So what’s different about ABL credit when it comes to a comparison to a Canadian chartered bank? The simple explanation is that in a bank line of credit your ratios and covenants have to be performing, as set out and agreed to by the bank and yourself, with a revolving ABL facility you need to ensure those assets are operating, ie turning over, and hopefully growing.

That's probably our most significant point today, that being that your assets secured under the ABL facility must have a solid liquidation and market value. In revolving business asset finance you typically borrow 90% of A/R, and 30-70%, as negotiated for inventory and equipment.

The appeal of Asset based lines of credit is that it pertains, in Canada, to all sizes of firms. While larger facilities tend to be in the millions of dollars a financing program of this manner can be set up for a minimum of 250k if in fact your firm is smaller. But we repeat... essentially there is no upper limit.

Want to regain control and take charge of your business financing

Someone’s Got Your Back On Cash Flow Solutions ! Canadian Working Capital Management

Cash flow solutions and working capital management in Canada. It's nice to know that you do in fact have solutions, help and assistance in Canada... in effect ' someones got your back ' .. helping you out.

A lot is written about why business fail, or stop growing ; we often hear that ' lack of good or experienced management' is the major cause, but trust us poor , or poorly timed working capital management and financial solutions are a true close second!

The good news, as we said though, is that someone in fact does ' have your back ' when it comes to those cash flow solutions in Canadian business financing. - In effect you do have a ' roadmap ' to business finance that you may not have thought you had.

These days though the reality is that you have traditional finance methods, and ' alternative ‘. Alternative is not as esoteric as you might think, in fact a good way we explain that to clients is that more often than not you're dealing with commercial non bank finance companies that are not ' regulated ' in that manner that are Canadian chartered banks, insurance companies, etc. And they have solutions to your challenges.

For small and medium sized businesses you simply need a story, and proper financial statements which often can be complimented with a good business plan or executive summary.

Every company in Canada is somewhere along what we could call the ' maturity spectrum '. Firms that are a bit larger or more established have access to some fairly heavy duty solutions which might include angel investors, some private equity, junior capital pools, and even modest forms of venture capital.

The reality is though is that for the majority of firms its the management and financing of their assets and growth that is the crux of cash flow solutions, and without this management of working capital during the sales and growth of sales period that make allows the Canadian business owner to make the transition from dream to reality when it comes to business success.

We often think that clients can be forgiven for thinking there is not a lot of financing options available in Canada for them - it certainly can feel that way on occasion. The reality though is that the lending of business finance funds is in fact the backbone of business in Canada. Borrowing and investing in fact make Canadian business.

We never forget the ultimate irony that your firm might have a better chance in slower economic times to get something done simply because in those boom times there’s too many deals and opportunities, and everyone is busy .

Financing a business comes down to 6 alternatives.

- You fund it yourself,
- You borrow funds,
- You sell assets,
- You finance internally through growth and management of assets,
- You are given funding, via grants, etc,
or you sell equity.

Our focus is really # 2; borrowing funds... actually monetizing assets. Those solutions as we said, are more plentiful than you think - receivable financing, equipment leasing, working capital term loans, asset based lines of credit that are non bank in nature, tax credit monetization, and securitization of sales.

Someone in fact does have your back in Canadian business cash flow solutions - that person just might be an experienced Canadian business financing advisor who has credibility and experience. Consider reviewing the above mentioned solutions in the context of both surviving and growing your business in Canada.

Confessions Of An SBL Government Loans Super Fan :The Canada Small Business Loan

How The CANADIAN SMALL BUSINESS FINANCING PROGRAM Makes A Difference !

SBL government loans. I guess you could call us a fan, even a super fan. The word fan comes from the root word ' fanatic ‘, denoting an ' enthusiastic devotee. So why is the Canada small business loan the recipient of our full support. Let's try and preach to some of the potential unconverted.

More and more businesses in Canada, new, and established, are seeking loans backed by the government. Talk about a great co-signer! And remember that we are talking about a loan, not a grant. We're always being asked about ' grant money’... free money in essence. We're sure it's out there somewhere, we just haven't found it, and we're equally believers in the ' there is no free lunch ' concept!

The SBL loan is a great choice for business when you're in a touch economy; it’s all about choosing the right lender under the program and ensuring you are aware of some basic rules and regulations that allow you to qualify for the program. We feel quite strongly that every Canadian business owner can actually do a great job of pre-qualifying themselves in advance.

Let's recap some of those basic qualifications. They include being a Canadian citizen or being eligible to legally borrow in Canada. That's just common sense. Although you only have to only guarantee 25% of the loan personally that comes with the understanding that you have a reasonable personal credit history. In Canada the credit bureaus work on a ‘scoring ' basis, and for purposes of SBL government loans you should at least have a score of 650.

The questions of rates and structures always comes up in connection with questions from clients. Interest rates are ultra competitive given that you business is either completely new, or has under 5 Million dollars in revenue (That’s the revenue cap under the program). Rates on the SBL small business loans are in the 3% over prime range and a small government fee can usually actually be added into the financing of the loan.

Any business financing application has strong elements of one thing - and that’s common sense questions. You should therefore be prepared to address some very basics, including a resume or bio on yourself, a description of your business, a cash flow repayment plan (that’s critical). Additionally some supporting documents are required, all of which in our opinion are again. very ' common sense ' oriented. They include a copy of your tax return, your incorporation data, a premises lease, etc.

It's a great idea to also have a clear idea of the financing you are requesting. The three categories of assets that can be financed under the program are equipment, leaseholds, and real estate. Unfortunately it’s not a cash loan per se, so there are no working capital or cash flow borrowings under the program. And by the way that’s a popular misconception.

We should also add that you need to inject a minimum of permanent equity, in effect your ' down payment ' of 10% of your total borrowing.

It’s strongly recommended that you investigate the power of the Canada small business SBL loan. You just might find you will become a super fan also! Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor for help with this great program.

Are Cash Flow Financing Challenges Managing You?

Who’s The Boss? Business Working Capital Management

Valid question, right? When it comes to your business working capital and cash flow financing who's running the show, you, or are those two culprits seemingly running your company?

We're remind of one of Yogi Berra's (many) great lines - ' when you come to a fork in the road, take it ‘! That's probably where you are now in many cases. Determining who will win the ongoing cash flow battle for supremacy.

The reality is that you can probably be forgiven for feeling ' Who's the boss ' as statistics show that 82% of business owner don't feel in control or comfortable about their cash flows. So how in fact do you regain that feeling of control that every business owner treasures.

A good start is to know what you're talking about. We've repeatedly said that cash flow is such an over used and misunderstood concept or term. We can get really technical (net income plus deprecation plus or minus changes in working capital components) but unless we're at an accounting trade show/convention that's not really what we're looking for here!

To make things more complex we can make a case that your ' cash flow ' has to do with historical, present, and future needs, making it even tougher to get a handle on.

There are some great tools and also solutions to manage your cash flow financing needs. And again, we're talking about real cash, not income statement profits. That frankly though is a good place to make a very important comment - if your cash flow statement ( it's component # 3 of every financial statement ) differs significantly from your income statement over time you probably will never really regain cash flow control/supremacy.

So lets examine some solid ways to make sure you feel good about that ' WHO'S THE BOSS' question we posed earlier.

First of all, keep your financials up to date and understand them. A small handful of key ratios or relationships you can easily, and we mean very easily monitor over time will allow you to feel ' in control ‘. Simple things like receivable days turnover, inventory turns, sales to fixed assets, etc.

It sure doesn’t hurt to do some methodical cash flow planning. Also, take a look at your overall capital structure from a viewpoint of debt and equity. This allows you to properly take advantage of market growth opportunities, even an acquisition perhaps.

We know we sound like a broken record sometimes, but understand your operating cycle; it’s the amount of time it takes for a dollar to flow thru your company. Match a financing solution to that selling cycle.

Hottest tip today on cash flow generation? It's dont pay anyone! But seriously, managing your payables and disbursements is critical, but we're the first to recognize the importance of supplier relationships. If you have a sales force you might consider paying them commissions when sales are paid, not made. Talk about incenting the collection focus!

If your assets aren’t turning over quickly focus on that. You can also monetize your current assets via bank lines, asset based lines of credit, working capital lines, receivable financing, inventory financing, and supply chain finance.

Who's the Boss when it comes to cash flow? Hopefully you. Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor on cash flow financing and business working capital analytics and solutions.

Pain To Power : An ABL Asset Finance Company Can Reverse Your Canadian Business Line Of Credit Challenges

Information on the Asset Based Business Line Of Credit Solution In Canada - It's non bank and it ... works!

Can an ABL asset based finance company, via a new business line of credit make your transition from financing pain to financing power? We think there is a strong case for that, and here's why.

Thousands of companies in Canada find themselves constantly challenge when it comes to ensuring their company has the right financing in place to both survive and grow .

For the small and medium sized business owners and financial managers in Canada there are some serious issues on the table: the jobs of employees, the value of the asset base in your company, and the ability to at a certain point in time to transition that business to a family member or third party.

Management therefore needs to realize that any turnaround in the business often will revolve around their own commitment to explore new types of financing that will in effect turn that ' pain’ into ' power'.

Financial challenges and problems require that they be identified early. There are a number of tell tale signs of trouble in your firm that often might be clear, or not so obvious. They include pressure from your bank on your operating line, financial losses that will ultimately link back to cash flow problems, pressure from other competitors in your sales environment, and sometimes issues you could never control such as new market forces.

The business line of credit, whether it's via a bank or an ABL asset finance company is often a key driver in your transition from pain to power. If your firm currently has a Canadian chartered bank line of credit you are subject to certain restrictions.

This facility is ultra dependent on a large number of key factors such as profit, operating performance which is measure via ratios and covenants, and your availability to provide collateral inside and outside the business. And personal guarantees as most Canadian businesses know are key to a long term bank relationship in many instances,

Canadian businesses are often in the position of having their business lines of credit are somewhat of a scapegoat for short term losses and a trend to unprofitability.

So if your firm finds itself in a downward or negative spiral what’s the solution? As we said a solid one might just well be a non bank business line of credit from a commercial ABL asset finance company.

But why can such a facility save your company, turn it around, and ensure that pain to power transition. We would offer up that it’s simply a case of the ABL firm taking a sign cant amount of more risk with your business. That risk though is somewhat measured from their point of view, as they focus predominantly on your overall asset base.

So you new ABL term sheet takes all your receivable, inventory, equipment, and in some cases real estate and rolls it up into one new large revolving credit facility It goes without saying that your firm must have good records and controls, and reporting capability, but at the end of the day the ' power ‘as opposed to the ' pain’ is now in sight.

When the business owner considers that ABL typically provides 85-90% lending against A/R, 30-70% on inventory, and then throws in an equipment component also... well... you get the drill - your firm has just reached a higher level of liquidity.

This new facility will, as time goes on, repair your company. Pressure from trade creditors will subside, you can take advantage of new growth opportunities, and sales can be back on track to grow.

You achieve this new higher level of borrowing by being able to supply regular on going info on your assets, and in most cases you'll be subject to a quarterly, semi annual or annual visit from your ABL lender.

If a turnaround in your financing fortunes is required you just may have discovered it. Consider speaking to a credible, experienced and trusted Canadian business financing advisor on you can successfully reverse your business challenges.
